Happy New Year. Pardon the irreverence but I am glad the holiday hoopla has halted. Sure, the religious and astrotheological underpinnings of the months between Halloween and New Year’s Day is not lost on me. Increasingly, I have grown weary of the rapacious robber barons of Madison Avenue (and Amazon and Alibaba!) as they do their conjuring convincing us that “spend,” “buy”, and ”charge” were ever words uttered by the Three Wise Men or Mary and Joseph. They say more is more and that more spending equals “peace on earth.” Really? Hmm. Oh, and then there’s the droning on about “how not to break your new year’s resolutions before February,” “New Year, New You” memes, and an onslaught of vision board meetups. Phew! Basta! As a spring-born baby the verdant, sensual allure of the vernal equinox is the clarion call that propels me into action. I take more of a slow burn approach when it comes to the January rollout of the new year. Winter is a time of dormancy: time to hibernate, reflect, and incubate. And be intentionally moody.(Parenthetically, I’m reminded of the late, great David Bowie -a January-born Cappy who also transitioned in early January 2016. One of the songs on his somewhat dystopian 2002 album Heathen is called Slow Burn.) If I could get away with it, I’d put an ”out of office” message on all emails or requests for social engagement until at least St. Patrick’s Day.
