Surely, I’m not alone in marveling at Mother Nature’s riveting displays of amber, ochre, and russet-hued foliage that Autumn bestows upon us here in the Northern hemisphere every year. I love it. It never gets old. A bit less awesome are the crispcool mornings requiring more than open-toed sandals (wasn’t it just August?) and the way darkness imposes itself on my commute home. I am certain you, too, have noticed how the lurid, limp leaves that litter our paths this season are a not-so-subtle reminder that we, too, will “fall” and wither. We show up for fall with our cornucopia of juicy summer memories to be harvested in time for winter’s hibernation. But I’m getting ahead of myself! Fall is a reminder to go with the flow. And that the cycles of birth and death are inescapable. Let that sink in for a moment. I find that the more I tend to my energetic hygiene and invite my Shadow to afternoon tea, the more ease I have surrendering to cyclicity in my Nature - inevitable shifts in mood, energy (and hormones!); the need for aloneness, stillness, and darkness; or, on the flip side, embracing the vibrancy of community, of raucous public spaces, depending on where I am in my natural orbit. And so for all of this, I am grateful. Just like the seasons and our vicissitudes affect how we flow with life’s cycles, our ancestral lineages and legacies can impact our lives: with boons and beneficence; with hardship and devastation; with repetition.
